How To Save Canva Designs As High-Resolution Images For Free

Canva is my lifesaver, and Iām sure for many designers, business owners, and content creators. But if youāre using the free version, youāve probably noticed that downloading high-resolution images isnāt as straightforward as youād like.
By default, Canva Free users cannot download images in 300 DPI or export transparent PNGs. Those features are only available for Canva Pro users.
But donāt worry. There are workarounds to export high-quality Canva designs without losing quality, even if youāre using a free Canva account.
In this guide, Iāll walk you through several methods to save high-resolution images from Canva Free without upgrading to Pro.
Why Do Downloaded Canva Free Images Look Blurry?
If your Canva design looks pixelated or loses sharpness when downloaded, itās because:
- Canva Free limits export resolution.
- JPG format compresses images and loses detail.
- The original canvas size is too small.
- Low-quality images or elements are being used.
But donāt worry. You can still download high-quality Canva images for free using the methods below. This is provided the elements, images and content used in your original Canva design are high-quality right from the start.
Do note that if they are blurry in the first place, downloading them from Canva will not make them less blurry.
If your Canva design still looks blurry, it might be due to low-resolution images or small elements.
How to Keep Canva Designs Sharp:
- Use high-quality stock photos (from Pexels, Unsplash, or Canvaās free library).
- Avoid stretching small images beyond their original size.
- Stick to vector elements (Canvaās default graphics scale well).
- Use bold, clean fonts (avoid thin, intricate lines).
When adding images on websites, make sure your site doesnāt get bogged down by heavy design files. You can optimize file speed with reliable hosting that keeps things running smoothly.
If your designs are high enough quality and you are ready to save them, move on to the various ways below.
1. Save as PNG Instead of JPG (Best Quality Format)
The best way to save high-resolution images in the Canva free version is to download them as PNG instead of JPG. PNG files retain more detail and have less compression.
Steps to Download High-Quality PNG:
Click āShareā in the top-right corner.
Select āDownload.ā
Under āFile Type,ā choose PNG.
For those who have Canva Pro, you can set the āSizeā to 3.125x (maximum dimension: 8000 x 3125 px).
Click āDownloadā and save your PNG file to your computer.
While Canva Pro allows larger image downloads, free users can still use the 2x size option for better quality.
2. Download as PDF Print and Convert to PNG/JPG (300 DPI Trick)
Since we canāt convert designs to a high-resolution PNG image for free in Canva, we can use a workaround.
A simple hack is to download your design as a PDF print file first, and then convert it into PNG or JPG.
Canvaās PDF Print option exports at a higher resolution (300 DPI) than direct image downloads in Free accounts. Hereās how:
Click āShareā ā āDownload.ā
Choose āPDF Printā (best for high resolution), and select āFlatten PDFā.
Click āDownload.ā
Next, convert the PDF you downloaded from Canva to PNG or JPG using a free online converter.
I use Adobe PDF, and you can use it for free with just an email sign up. If you donāt sign up, you are able to convert files too, but you wonāt have the options to save it as high-resolution images.
So Iād suggest that you sign up to take advantage of the free features by signing up if you want to use Adobe.
Another great option that allows you to convert PDF to PNG files without losing quality (still maintaining the PDF high-resolution version) is to use PDF2PNG.
Iāve tried different tools and want to share with you that this works best among the rest. Hereās how to use it:
With your internet browser, go to PDF2PNG.com.
Then, select āPDF to PNGā tab and upload your PDF file or drag it into the dotted-lined box.

When the conversion is done, you will see a thumbnail with your file, select the āDownloadā button to save it in your computer.

Open up your image to check, it should look as good as your PDF.
3. Use a Larger Canvas Size Before Designing
My favorite Canva trick to get high-resolution downloads for free is to start with a larger canvas size. Canva allows up to canvas size of 5000 pixels for free users.
- Click āCreate a Designā ā āCustom Size.ā
- Set dimensions to at least 2500px ā 5000px on the longest side.
- Design as usual.
- Make sure all your content elements are high in quality for a canvas size thatās as big as 5000px. Otherwise, this method wonāt work.
- Download as PNG using the default settings (96 dpi).
If you are using the free version of Canva, you canāt adjust the PNG size, but since your dimension is bigger than the actual size you want, you can now scale down your dimensions to 300dpi.
A bigger canvas results in a sharper final image when resized down.
4. Use AI Upscalers to Improve Image Quality
If your Canva Free images look blurry, use AI upscaling tools to sharpen and enhance them.
Free AI Upscalers for Canva Images:
- Letās Enhance ā (letsenhance.io)
- Upscale.media ā (upscale.media)
How to Enhance Canva Image Resolution Using AI:
- Upload your downloaded PNG or PDF-converted image to an AI upscaler.
- Choose 2x or 4x upscaling.
- Download the enhanced high-res image.
This trick works great for social media posts, presentations, or digital prints.
