How to Make a Canva Template to Sell on Etsy Step by Step

To make a Canva template to sell on Etsy, design your layout in Canva using free, editable elements, then grab the Template Link (not the share link) from Canva’s share menu so buyers get their own copy instead of your original file.

Embed that link in a simple one-page delivery PDF, upload the PDF to your Etsy listing as a digital download, and set the listing type to Digital. Buyers purchase, receive the PDF instantly, and click the link to create their own editable Canva copy.

I want to be upfront about something before I get into this tutorial.

I have sold Canva templates on Etsy. I have also watched people spend three hours on a design, upload it to Etsy incorrectly, and wonder why their buyer opened a dispute saying they could not access anything.

The process of making a Canva template to sell on Etsy is not complicated. But there is one step in the middle that trips up almost every new seller, and it is not the design step.

It is the link step. Specifically, the difference between a Canva share link and a Canva template link. If you send the wrong one, your buyer edits your original file. Your original. The one you spent all that time on.

I am going to walk you through the whole process from scratch, including that part, so you do not have to learn it the hard way.

What you actually need before you start

You do not need a lot. This is genuinely one of the lowest-barrier ways to start selling digital products, which is part of why I recommend it.

Here is what you need:

You can start with a free Canva account, but you will have to move to the Pro version when it comes to preparing your template for sale (more in step 3).

So I’d recommend you to start with Canva Pro right from the start, since it gives you access to more fonts and elements.

An Etsy seller account. Also free to set up, though Etsy charges a small listing fee per item and takes a percentage of each sale.

A product idea. That is what Step 1 is for.

That is genuinely it. No fancy software. No design degree. I have been a professional graphic designer for over twenty years and I still use Canva for this because it is the tool my buyers already have.

Step 1: Choose a template niche that sells

Before you open Canva, spend fifteen minutes on Etsy first.

Go to etsy.com and type “Canva template” into the search bar. Do not press enter yet. Look at the autocomplete suggestions. Those are real searches from real buyers. Write down five that feel relevant to your skills or audience.

Then search each one and look at the results. You want to see listings with reviews (which means people are buying) but not so many listings that you are buried.

A search returning 2,000 results with sellers averaging 50 to 200 reviews is a sweet spot. You are not looking for zero competition. You are looking for proof that people buy this thing.

Some of the most consistently strong performers as of 2026:

Social media templates (Instagram posts, story sets, carousel bundles). Business templates (media kits, pricing guides, client welcome packets). Planner templates (weekly, monthly, ADHD-friendly). Wedding and event templates (invitations, seating charts, menus).

The niche that works best for you is at the intersection of what sells and what you can actually design well. Start there.

If you want a deeper process for finding your niche using Pinterest and Etsy search data, I wrote a full guide on finding your best Etsy Canva template niche that goes into a lot more detail.

Step 2: Design your Canva template

Open Canva and click “Create a design.” Choose the dimensions that match your template type. Instagram posts are 1080 x 1080px. Stories are 1080 x 1920px. A4 for planners or documents. Custom dimensions for anything else.

A few things that make templates sell better:

Keep it editable. Every text box, colour block and image placeholder should be something the buyer can change easily. If your design relies on a clever custom font that lives only in your Canva account, your buyer cannot replicate it. Test your own template as if you were a complete beginner before you list it.

Limit the fonts to two, maybe three. Buyers who are not designers will not know how to manage five fonts. Simplicity is not laziness here. It is a feature.

Use Canva elements carefully. If you are on the free plan, stick to free elements only. If you are on Canva Pro and you use Pro elements, your buyer will also need Canva Pro to access them without a watermark. That limits your audience.

Many successful template sellers stick to free elements even with a Pro account for exactly this reason.

Aim for three to five pages or slides at minimum. A single-page template feels thin. A set feels like value. Bundle a main template with a few complementary variations and you can charge more.

Create mockups while you are in Canva. These are the images buyers see in your listing. Use your template applied to a phone screen, a laptop screen, a desk scene. You can create these in Canva too. Good mockups dramatically increase click-through on Etsy.

This is the step that matters most, so read it carefully.

When you are ready to share your Canva design, Canva gives you several options. The one you must use for Etsy selling is the Template Link. Not the edit link. Not the collaboration link. The Template Link.

Here is why. When a buyer clicks a Template Link, Canva automatically creates a copy of your design in their account. They work on their own copy. Your original is completely untouched.

When a buyer clicks a standard share or edit link, they access your actual file. If they make changes, you see those changes. This is the mistake that causes buyers to accidentally overwrite a seller’s original design.

How to get the Template Link in Canva:

Open your finished design. Click Share in the top right corner. Click “More” at the bottom of the share options. Look for “Template Link” and click it. Copy the link.

That link is what you will paste into your delivery PDF in the next step.

One important note. Template Links require Canva Pro in some cases. If you are on the free plan and you do not see the Template Link option, this is why.

You have two choices: upgrade to Pro, or keep all your designs using free elements only and share them as a PDF with a note that buyers need to use File, Make a Copy within Canva. The Template Link method is cleaner and the industry standard for Etsy sellers, so if you are serious about this, Canva Pro is worth it.

Step 4: Create the delivery PDF

Etsy does not let you upload a live link as the product file. What you upload is a PDF, and inside that PDF is the Template Link your buyer clicks to access the design.

Make this PDF simple and professional. You can create it in Canva.

One page is all you need. Include a small preview image of the template. A clear heading like “Your Canva Template Link.” The clickable link itself. Two or three lines of instructions: Click the link. Canva will open and create a copy in your account. Start editing.

Add a small note reminding buyers not to share the link. And add a thank-you. It costs nothing and buyers remember it.

Save the PDF with a name that’s easy to recognize by your target audence. For example “Mediakit-Blogger-Template-by-YourShopName.pdf” is professional, “final_FINAL_v2_USE THIS ONE.pdf” is not.

This PDF is the actual product file you will upload to your Etsy listing.

Step 5: Set up your Etsy shop

If you do not have an Etsy shop yet, go to etsy.com, click “Sell on Etsy” and follow the setup steps. You will need:

A shop name (up to 20 characters, no spaces). Your billing information. A profile photo and shop banner (create both in Canva).

In your shop About section, make it explicit that you sell digital Canva templates. Buyers who expect a physical product will open disputes. Being clear upfront eliminates that confusion and reduces refund requests significantly.

Set your shop to “Digital downloads” mode. This means Etsy automatically delivers your PDF to the buyer immediately after purchase, without you needing to manually send anything.

Step 6: Create and optimise your Etsy listing

This is where most new sellers leave money on the table. The design is done. The PDF is ready. But the listing itself determines whether anyone finds it.

Title. Etsy is a search engine. Your title needs to include the keywords buyers actually search for.

Put the most important keyword first. “Editable Instagram Story Template Canva, Social Media Pack, Business Branding Kit” is better than “Pretty Pink Instagram Stories.” The first 55 characters show in search results, so front-load what matters.

Photos. Use all ten photo slots Etsy allows. The first image is your main hook. After that, show the template in use on a phone, a laptop, close-ups of editable elements, a before-and-after showing blank template versus a customised version. Buyers need to visualise themselves using this before they buy.

Description. Write for a real person first, search engine second. Start with what the template is and who it is for. Then list what is included. Then cover the technical details: Canva free or Pro, number of pages, dimensions, how to access. End with your delivery process so buyers know exactly what happens after they purchase.

Tags. Etsy gives you 13 tags. Use all of them. Mix broad terms (“Canva template,” “editable social media”) with specific ones (“Instagram story template Canva,” “small business social media kit”). Do not repeat words you already have in your title.

Price. Do not underprice. A single well-designed template can sell for $7 to $15. A bundle of five to ten templates can sell for $15 to $35. Buyers on Etsy often associate very low prices with low quality. Price with confidence.

Step 7: Upload the PDF and publish

In your Etsy listing, scroll to the bottom of the listing form. Find the “Digital files” section. Upload your delivery PDF here.

Make sure the listing type is set to “Digital” not “Physical.” This is in the Type field near the top of the listing form. Getting this wrong means Etsy will prompt your buyer to enter a shipping address, which will cause immediate confusion.

Double-check everything before you click Publish. Click through your own Template Link and confirm it opens a copy of your design in a fresh Canva account, not your original. Open your delivery PDF and confirm the link is clickable. Check your photos look sharp and your title reads naturally.

Then publish.

Once your first listing is live, the next step is making it visible. That is a whole separate topic, but I covered the most common visibility mistakes (and exactly what to do instead) in this post on 7 mistakes to avoid when selling Canva templates.

Common mistakes to avoid

Sending the edit link instead of the template link. This is the biggest one. The buyer edits your original. You get an angry message. Use the Template Link, every single time.

Using Pro elements when your buyers are on the free plan. They will see watermarks. They will not be happy. Check which elements you are using before you list anything.

One listing and done. Etsy rewards active shops. Aim for ten listings before you expect meaningful traffic. Etsy’s own data shows shops with at least ten listings get significantly more first-month visibility than shops with fewer.

Ignoring the mockups. Text-heavy listings with no lifestyle images do not convert. Show the design in context, on a device, in a setting. Buyers need to see it being used.

Pricing too low out of fear. Your time has value. Your design experience has value. Pricing at $1 undercuts every other seller and trains buyers to expect your work to be worth nothing.

FAQ

Do I need Canva Pro to sell templates on Etsy?

You do not need Pro to get started. The free plan works. However, Canva Pro makes the Template Link feature more reliably available, gives you access to a wider range of fonts and elements, and includes Magic Resize for creating multiple format variations quickly. If you are serious about selling templates regularly, Pro pays for itself fast.

Can I use Canva Pro elements in templates I sell?

You can, with an important condition. Templates that include Pro elements must be delivered as Template Links, not downloaded files. Your buyers will also need Canva Pro to access those elements without a watermark. For the widest possible audience, stick to free elements.

What is the difference between a Template Link and an edit link in Canva?

A Template Link creates a copy of your design in the buyer’s Canva account when they click it. They work on their copy and your original is protected. An edit link gives them direct access to your original file. Always use the Template Link for anything you are selling.

How do I deliver the template to the buyer on Etsy?

Upload a PDF containing the Template Link to the “Digital files” section of your Etsy listing. Etsy automatically sends this PDF to the buyer immediately after purchase. You do not need to do anything manually.

How many templates do I need before I launch?

Technically one is enough to start. Practically, aim for at least five to ten listings before you expect consistent traffic. Etsy’s algorithm favours active shops with multiple listings. Ten listings also lets you spread across slightly different keywords and capture more search traffic.

Can I sell Canva templates on platforms other than Etsy?

Yes. Gumroad, Creative Market and your own website are all options. I covered how Gumroad works in this guide on how to make money on Gumroad. Etsy has the built-in buyer audience advantage, which makes it the best starting point for most new sellers.

What should I include in the delivery PDF?

A preview image of the template, the clickable Template Link, brief instructions (three to five steps maximum), a note asking buyers not to share the link, and a thank-you message. One clean page is all you need.
